Darna keeps what you read on your iPhone. A few things have to leave it to work, and this page says exactly which, and where they go.

On your iPhone

Your library, the passages and notes you keep, and your reading stats stay on the device. Darna has no accounts, no ads and no tracking.

Listening

When you listen, the text of each paragraph, plus the paragraphs either side of it so the voice gets the intonation right, goes to Darna’s server. The server passes it to ElevenLabs, which makes the audio. ElevenLabs’ handling of that text is covered by their own policy.

So a paragraph is never paid for twice, the server keeps each paragraph’s audio and its text indefinitely, stored under a fingerprint of the text. Nothing about you is stored with it. The server also keeps one count per month of how much audio it has made.

Saving from Safari

When you save an article, the share sheet sends its first few paragraphs to the same server, so listening can start at once.

Pictures

Darna downloads an article’s pictures straight from the site that published them.
